Usually those students who have scored very well in their class 10 board
exams (and are interested in taking up engineering as a career choice) decide
to prepare for the IIT JEE entrance exam. The clock starts once the class 10
board results are out. Before embarking on the preparation journey, one must
become aware of the following points -
- In
the Indian educational system, knowledge levels tested in the class 10
board exam (for the subjects of maths and science) are usually an
extension of those that were introduced to the students at levels of class
6 or 7. As a student moves through the levels of class 6 to 10 he/she
comes across increasingly complex problems for the same underlying
concepts. In class 11 and 12 however, a student encounters a paradigm shift
in the vastness and complexity of concepts. The biggest challenge they
face is the time taken to become familiar to a plethora of concepts of
increasing complexity -two years seem too short a time to study a subject
in detail.
- Those
preparing for competitive examinations have the additional challenge of
knowing this vast landscape of topics (covered under class 12 board exam) so well, that they can get the solution to problems asked in the
competitive exams under a minute.
- Finally,
those wanting to get into the coveted IITs have to know the topics in such great depths that they can solve the toughest of problems (not many people associated
with these subjects can solve problems asked in IIT JEE entrance exam) in the given time.
One must therefore realize that the key
to success in the entrance exam is to develop in-depth understanding of the topics. An important aspect of getting complete understanding of a topic comes with revision. Revision of topics (multiple rounds) is more effective than trying to solve problems from hundreds of books and getting lost in the way. It is therefore imperative that one invests both time and effort in the right set of books and in getting the right advice.
